4am, mother 'not home' and dog left alone with a three week old baby!

Just terrible; poor poor little mite.

I would guess from what I've read that the dog (a Patterdale I understand) was either jealous or, more probably, "just playing" with a new squeaky toy. We don't know yet, and maybe won't know, the full facts behind this tragedy.

Those of us on this forum know very well that even the most trusted dog should not be left for a microsecond with a small child unattended. I hope this fact is dinned into prospective parents at ante-natal and post-natal classes and clinics. If not, it should be.

When I was pregnant & when both my children were born I trusted Bandit, my Stafford, implicitly. However, I NEVER left him alone with the babies, and even when they became toddlers they were strictly supervised.

Things happen - dogs are dogs & sometimes their base instincts overrule their love of family.
