Poor Dempsey! :(

First topic message reminder :

Once again, he's eaten something he shouldn't have. He got into my bedroom yesterday, while I was at university, and ate two pairs of underwear.

Luckily, as he's done this so often before, we're used to it and know how to react. At the moment, we're keeping a very careful eye on him. He's got a bit of a bad stomach, but he'd had that anyway, due to an earlier incident a couple of weeks ago, when he swallowed some of his bedding fibres. If it looks like he's losing his appetite at all or he stops passing stools, he'll be off down to the vets, just in case.

For now, I've given him castor oil, which he loved, and he'll be having tinned pumpkin later. He's currently curled up under his blankets on the sofa, with the electric fire on.

Sod's law, really, as I always keep underwear off of my floor, just in case he gets in there. Yesterday morning, I was so frazzled and stressed, I forgot to pick them up and put them back in my drawer after I'd been rummaging through it.

Well that's good news then. Has he been given anything out of the ordinary that could upset him?

Oh, he's definitely a knicker eater! He's done it before, so he's still guilty!

He seems a bit better this morning, although he pooped inside overnight. Nothing nasty, just a bit soft.

He's always had a weak stomach, and gets little upsets from time to time. Hopefully this is just one of them!

Excuse my poop talk again but.... if he ate anything he shouldn't of.... poop is a wonderful thing.

I do hope he is feeling better.

When I got up this morning he'd been sick in the living room (nice!), but there was very little there - he'd obviously eaten it up again (even nicer!)!

I HATE! it when they do that!!!

Daft boy! For such clever animals they really are daft when it comes to learning the consequences of eating certain things but if it has to do with baths or the vet or anything good for them, very fast learners then

Having dogs and 12 years working in a care home means i sometimes forget that poop talk isn't a normal part of daily conversation until i notice the horrified looks my family give me

Any evidence of the offending item yet?

Been out all day, but I don't think he's produced anything yet.

It might have been absorbed by the carpet! If he just threw up bile, it soaks right in and just leaves slime behind. Yum!

Just a little sidetrack - but I think I'm right in saying that wild dogs bring back food to their offspring in their stomachs, and then disgorge it for the little ones.

If so, when they vomit maybe some primeval bell rings in our doggies' heads and they think "mummy has brought me some food - yummy" and that's why they do what they do.

Or, they've overeaten more than their stomach can handle at that particular time, so they put a little by for later.

Or, I might be entirely wrong!

They do, indeed! It's assumed to be the reason why dogs will target the mouth area for licking - it's an affectionate gesture, which links in with how they would lick their mother's mouth to urge her to regurgitate food! Nom nom nom!

You've got a good point about the possible reason for eating vomit. Hadn't thought of that! There's another assumption that dogs will often eat their vomit to 1) prevent food wastage and re-ingest as much of the vomit as possible, which should be easier to digest the second time around, or 2) to prevent leaving behind signs of weakness to 'rival' canines.

I hadn't ever thought of your reason, though! It's quite an interesting concept, isn't it?
