‘Electric shock collars’ banned under KC training scheme


THE KENNEL Club has changed the wording of its Accredited Instructor Scheme’s (KCAI) code of practice to include a ban on using electronic training collars or what it calls ‘other aversive methods’.

The code now states that all members working under the scheme must ‘promote and use suitable and motivational methods consistent with principles of kindness, fairness and good welfare, not use electric shock collars or similarly coercive electric equipment and be able to advise on the choice, maintenance, safe and humane use of appropriate training equipment’.

The KC has lobbied for a ban on the use of these collars for many years. This week KC secretary, Caroline Kisko said: "Electric shock collars fail to address underlying behaviour and can cause further behaviour problems by training a dog to respond out of fear of further punishment rather than a natural willingness to obey. The availability of positive training methods far outweighs the need for techniques based on aversion or pain.

"The KCAI scheme aims to raise standards in dog training and canine care across the UK and abroad, and we are very glad to see that its support of positive training methods has now been backed up by a specific ban on the use of electric shock collars."

The scheme offers those who work with dogs the opportunity to gain a nationally-recognised qualification and, the KC said, gives a safeguard to the public by working under a clear code of practice. For more information on the scheme email Clare Hitchcox on clare.hitchcox@thekennelclub.org.uk

Very good news!

I'm glad they've explained the reasons; not simply, "Shock collars = cruel!"

We don't use either shock or prong collars here. I don't like either. I feel they are completely unnessecary, there are better ways to train dogs!

There certainly are.

Eventually England will follow the Welsh & ban their use completely. I hope.
