I found this just checking that Pat Malone meant the same every. Not 100% but, yes, we do shorten everything.

I was up at sparrows fart this morn...

Most of ours (although certainly not all!) go back to the old Cockney Rhyming Slang which was invented by the poor workers so that the bosses/toff couldn't understand them!

We use,

but apple & pears here means you cant compare the 2 things you just mentioned together. We use apples & any other fruit you choose to mention.
Adam & eve.... now that means something completely different to us & granny wouldnt like me to say it.

I do love Australian slang - it's descriptive and funny! I love "stunned mullet" for example.
I'd rather go to the dunny than to the bog (although we generally say loo - which is an interesting derivation in itself).
We are Tom & Dick instead of chunder (which is another interesting one).
We also are familiar with ankle biters, but depending on where you are from they can also be bairns, wains ( I do like this one - wee uns) sprogs or chavvies.

Adam & Eve is quite common "would you adam & eve it" but a lot of what Caryll quoted is shortened further; we'll go for Ruby, have a butchers, do our barnet, talk on the dog. We might even get elephants, Brahms & Liszt or bladdered upon occasion!
The list is endless, entertaining, and sure to confuse our American cousins that produced your link!

I think you're missing the point, Tracy. It's Cockney Rhyming Slang. So the last word rhymes with whatever you're replacing it with.

I think i get it.
I've grown up with it from 7yrs of age. Though it still doesn't make common sense to an Aussie. A born & bred pom, & I love him to bits!
My mum is 1/2 irish, my dad was german, my OH is greek, my ex inlaws were Italian & my best friend is from the Canary Islands. I have a few cultures to understand, listen to & learn off.
I've grown up with it from 7yrs of age. Though it still doesn't make common sense to an Aussie.
